Made it to Orvieto! We found Marco in Santa Fiora with a large van which he uses to transport cycling groups in the area. It cost us 150 euros for the 75km transfer which was a good price. Rain and fog coming out of the mountains .. good day for a transfer!
When we got to Orvieto Scalo it was clearing so we got on our bikes and road out to the Commonwealth War cemetery on quiet roads and were very impressed with how well it is kept. Tom and Rosemarie found the headstone they were looking for (J J West) and we found three Canadians and took a number of pictures.
Then we changed and walked over to the vennicular and took it to the upper town and walked around in the rain taking pictures of the Duomo. By the time we got to the bottom (Orvieto Scalo) it was raining pretty hard! We hung out under shelter until it let up then walked briskly to the small cafe/restaurant we saw beside our hotel .. and had a very nice Italian dinner with a nice bottle of Sangeovese wine from the region.
Today is to be sunny (once the fog lifts!) and we are taking trains to Macerata ..we think we will get off early and cycle to Monte San Giusto as tomorrow might be wet .. and we don't need another busy hilltop city!
