Today we watched the clouds hang low in the valley from our window in Cortona before breakfast and then headed out uphill out of town to Marion's surprise on gentle grades above the clouds passing into the Umbria region and saying goodbye to Tuscany! It was a very quiet road and as we peaked at 840m we could see the terrain change and with more forest reminding Harold of some of the valleys in Nelson Lakes NZ!
The descent into San Leo Bastia we took slowly to enjoy the views and then stopped for a capuccino at a small cafe in the sun to warmup after a cool descent!
After some busy roads we then passed through Umbertide at a low of 247m and enjoyed looking at the old fort at the edge of town.
The next road followed the Tarpina river and got very quiet as everyone retreated for siesta and it was a marvelous road meandering up into the hills.
Pietralunga turns out to be a pretty and sleepy town and after a few pictures we looked up our hotel and were warmly great and found ourselves in a suite fit for a queen in her birthday!
